About Me

Hello and thank you so much for taking the time to visit my website!  I am honored that you would take the time to read my blog and explore my material.

Have you ever wondered how you could better spend the precious, limited time you have with your kids instead of letting the days slip by and wonder how you feel as if you blinked and they were 5 or 11 or 18?

  • Do you ever feel overwhelmed by being a parent, a spouse, an employee, a son or daughter, a friend, a volunteer, etc?
  • As a Christian, do you often feel like giving in to our secular society because you just don’t have the energy to fight for your kid’s salvation?

Jen and I do too!  But, we would like to share some of our ideas, experiences, and plans to parent our kids in a Christian home.

About Mark

My name is Mark LaMaster and I have two children, Hannah (12) and Lincoln (10).  I have been married to my wife and best friend, Jen, for 18 years.  Together, we have been on an amazing spiritual journey over the past few years.  I will share our journey with you shortly, but first I would like you to know what you can expect in my blog.

What I Write About

  • Christian-based parenting tips, ideas, and stories from our experiences-including our blooper ideas.
  • Pursuing a financially debt-free lifestyle: including our journey to become debt-free, including what worked and what didn’t work for us.
  • Parent-child activities that help you grow closer in your relationship with your children and with God.

Our Amazing Journey

Jen and I are both registered nurses.  In fact, we both graduated in 1997 from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Go Augie Vikings!  We have been fortunate to have wonderful careers in the nursing profession and know that we are impacting patients’ lives everyday.

As with many college grads, graduation day comes with a diploma as well as a pile of debt!  We both had financial aid, but didn’t know how long it would take to pay it off when we signed the financial aid forms.  We pursued our passion in the nursing profession and soon we decided to have a family and were blessed with 2 beautiful children.  We bought a larger home, had two cars, a cat; everything but the white-picket fence.

We were making great money and investing a little for retirement, but something didn’t feel quite settled for the either of us.  That’s when I heard a guy by the name of Dave Ramsey on the radio.  His message on managing money the way God intended emanated within me.  I bought and read his book over a weekend.  I knew from that weekend on that Jen and I would become debt free, including our mortgage.

As with many great intentions, we did not take immediate action.  But in 2008, we made a decision and became intensely focused on reaching our goal.  On July 8, 2014, Jen and I walked into our local bank to pay the final payment on our mortgage.  We did it!  Our family sacrificed for 6 years to reach our goal.  We celebrated by travelling to Nashville, Tennessee, to meet Dave Ramsey to perform our Debt Free Scream!

But that’s not the amazing journey.  Part of our Amazing Journey is that by changing how we managed our money also changed our relationship with God.  The more we sacrificed, the more we seemed to grow closer to God.  The less material things we owned, the more we focused on Him.  We cut the cable and enjoyed more time together as a family.  We learned to seek out free or inexpensive activities requiring us to expand our creativity.
